I am delighted to hear of your progress and to know you will be in Cleveland next year. Your cousin Daniel lives in Cleveland with his family and we have friends on the teaching staff at Case. We are most impressed with the resources available for learning there, and know you can be challenged sufficiently.

Your Mom I know is cheering you on from above. Who wouldn't be you are doing just great. The news of your moving your lower body, kicking, crawling, etc is just outstanding. I am soo very excited for you. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! AND THREE CHEERS FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK!

Did you get to Anya's wedding? I hope she is very happy.

Lots of love. Aunt Jane

Chris,

Oh My God. I'm sorry, I finally heard about your incident. I have been lost in myself for a whole year. I will keep my prayers to you. I wish you are still in Brooklyn, so I can pay you a visit as soon as I can. This is good that you have good care from friends and family.

I am now studying in Acupuncture, which I had promised my mom. I have learnt alot from my study. I'll be looking into what I can do for you, where Western Medicine can't.

Please keep in touch with me. My brother will be a licensed Acupuncturist the end of this year.

I hope you feel better, due to you had pull me up when I lost my mom last year. Thank you.

Chris,

Your progress these past six months has been truly remarkable: in terms of regaining strength and mobility of course, but no less so in my opinion in terms of bringing to bear on your circumstances your considerable intellectual and spiritual gifts.

What you have suffered has been in the truest sense of the word a "catastrophic" injury, an injury in which the shattering of your spine has been only the most obvious aspect. Your response to these circumstances has been in every way I know how to measure simply magnificent, awe-inspiring really.

I remember your final visit with Dr. Anant at Lutheran Hospital just prior to his releasing you to Mount Sinai. After examining your legs and failing to find the hoped-for response he said: "They will come back when they come back." I took those words to mean "they WILL come back" and so they have.

How wonderful it is that you have survived an accident that could have killed you, that you will have the career in teaching, research and medicine for which you have worked so hard, and that you will one day like Ashok Anant inspire confidence in those you treat - and their families.

Great to hear from you. I applaud your being so powerfully clear about your options, assessing them, doing what there is to do, and moving forward.

Before I had my own medical adventure it was hard for me to imagine what that meant - to act powerfully and clearly in the face of circumstances. Now it's easy to spot, and it's good to see.: you're an empowered patient. Keep it up.

When you have a moment, take a look at my post <a href="http://www.e-patients.net/archives/2008/07/steal_these_sli.html" rel="nofollow">Steal These Slides</a> on the e-patient blog.
